“I have a boyfriend!” – How Do I Tell The Parents?

by | Family

You are in love and want to take your sweetheart home with you. But what’s the best way to tell your parents that you’re in a relationship?

Whether you tell them or not is up to you!

Whether you want to tell your parents that you have a boyfriend or girlfriend is entirely up to you. On the one hand, this is your private matter and you are not obliged to tell anyone. On the other hand, there can be advantages in letting your parents know about your boyfriend/girlfriend, and you don’t have to be afraid that they might “find out”.

Different possibilities

There is no ONE way to tell your parents about your (first) boyfriend or girlfriend. Because all parents are different and everyone has a different relationship with their parents. You know your mother and father best, so you are probably the best judge of where and when is a good time to break the news.

Whether you mention it “in passing” or make a “big deal” out of it, whether you tell both parents together or one parent alone first, is up to you. Choose the option that you feel comfortable with.

TIP:

  • Think about whether you want to tell your parents about your treasure beforehand or whether you want to introduce it in person right away.
  • It is helpful to start the conversation in a positive way. For example, you could tell your parents that something really nice happened to you recently and that you would like to tell them about it!
  • If you don’t dare to tell them in person, you can also write them a message!
  • Often, parents will notice a change in your behavior and may ask you about it, so take advantage of this opportunity!
  • If you have a Facebook profile and are friends with your parents, you could also change your relationship status and wait for them to ask you about it!
  • If you have a good relationship with your siblings, you could also ask them to help you deliver the message!

Good news!

Try not to worry too much. Remember, it is actually very good news that you are “breaking” to your parents – you are in love and have found someone who feels the same way! That’s nice!

If you manage to convey this joy to your parents and maybe even smile when you tell them, your parents will probably be happy together with you and be glad that you are telling them about it!

Sometimes, however, parents may not react so positively when their children start having relationships. Often there are fears and worries of the parents behind it. You can find out more about this here!
